Importance of hypothyroidism medication during pregnancy

Importance of hypothyroidism medication during pregnancy

A developing fetus depends on the mother to provide all the thyroid hormone need for it during the first 13 weels of gestation. If the mother is not able to provide the required thyroid hormone to the fetus, it can result in miscarrage, cognitive problems, lowered IQ.

Women rarely realize the profound impact the thyroid can have on a woman's fertility, pregnancy, and fetal development. Women who are hypothyroid should not only continue to take their prescribed thyroid medications, but to see their physicians as early as possible after pregnancy is suspected so that they can be retested, and medication dosages adjusted to protect the pregnancy and the health of the fetus.
